My buddy and I are having another basketball camp this summer. We need to think of cool prizes for 5th-9th graders. We were thinking Xbox360, Ipod mini, maybe Dallas Mavericks jerseys/T-shirts/tickets, also my buddy played with Quinton Ross at SMU might be able to get him to send us a game jersey for a prize. Maybe some basketball equipment like jumpsoles, etc. What else would be cool? And what I’ve said so far what sounds like the coolest prize? Thanks!

I would say dump the 360 – Video games are keeping kids from doing things like playing basketball (and other sports which keep the healthy).

I was thinking of this for you, how about a trade up system?

This will work for a multi day camp. Start out small and allow more kids to win. Start with socks and then go to a pair of breakways, then a Jersey then he can trade the jersey to an iPod and so on and so forth until the top prize it reached. The prizes are groupled into catgories, so if a kid has an iPod and does not want a second 1, he can get pair of Sneakers.

I am not a firm believer that every kid needs to win (actually I do not believe that at all) but many parents do. This way some kids are going to walk away with big rewards and some with small rewards.

Or players can achieve points and then use them to buy things at the end or when they are earned. Say an T-Shirt is 50 points. He gets 20 for hustling, 10 for team work, 5 for play and he wants that jersey. He can pass up on 35 point items and hope to get 15 points before somebody gets it. He will work his butt off to get it and then work towards the next thing on the list.

Just my 2 cents and my ideas. A game Jersey is the coolest gift but 5th-9th graders may not appreciate it true value and rarity.
