Because of a small budget, I got stuck with a church gymnasium for my reception. The wedding is in winter, so we can’t do it outside.
I have lots of ideas for draping tulle and hanging lights…but WHAT DO I DO WITH THE BASKETBALL HOOPS?!?!?!
Can the hoops be cranked up to the ceiling? I remember the hoops at my school’s gym did that. If that’s the case, it really doesn’t stand out too much like in this picture:
If they can’t be moved, maybe you could drape fabric to make a tent like feel to hide the hoops. Something like this:
Hope this helps!

if it coordinates with your theming and colors why not get a garland of artificial flowers and entwine it around them, or drape streamers from them. another idea is to create a cascade of balloons falling from them, it looks really dramatic

you could measure the inside circumference of the hoops & get yourself some inexpensive cane baskets & drape flowers in them or plastic hanging pots may work then either wrap ribbon around the poles or again fake flowers leading to the hoop
hope this helps good luck

i would say just totally ignore them. who is going to be looking up there anyways? if you drape them or something i think that would look tacky and just draw attention to them. make everything at eye level gorgeous and of course your going to be gorgeous so no one will notice the uncovered hoops.

Drape fabric under and over the hoop to hide it from sight and then string lights from the hoop to various places around the gym. Also, never underestimate the power of lights. Dim the gym lights if at all possible, keep twinkle lights near the ground and have candlelight on the tables.

You may not want to hear this, but here goes… Ignore them. You try to cover them up or make it into something else, you will only draw attention to them. My suggestion is, do your tables really well, plus you have the tulle and lights in other areas… use these to draw the eye toward the center of the room, and I guarantee people will forget all about the basketball hoops. They might be noticed in a passing glance, but it wont be so bad. You can tell your photographer to avoid them for the photos (which he should know to do, but still). Most venues have one or two things that a bride would change. Basketball hoops are not that bad in the grand scheme of things.

I gotta agree to ignore them and keep the focal points lower to the ground…if you want to do something just cover them in solid black. Don’t add lights or flowers or anything cause it will draw the eye up there. Just wrap them in black sheets/tablecloth and then pretend they aren’t there.
