I am going to be a junior in high school and I’m trying to gain strength over the summer. I was told to work out my core, but I need specifics. Which workout is the best for each muscle? What should I focus on and what should I avoid?

Yes, definitely work the core. But also work ‘basketball muscles’ and movements. By that I mean perform exercises that will develop strength, power, explosiveness, quickness, footwork, and more athletic skills that will directly correlate to basketball. I have an article here, http://www.hoopsu.com/playertips_strengthtraining.html that explains what I mean more in-depth.
If you are also in need of a specific workout that is designed for basketball players, feel free to check out the program I designed and use with my players: http://www.hoopsu.com/basketballstrengthspeed.html It is a complete year-round training program that is completely ready-to-go (you don’t have to figure out how and what to do). It also incorporates many drills and exercises that are specific to basketball players. It will help build strength that will transfer to on-court athleticism.
