I don’t know if you saw them both play in college, but Walton was a better all around player than Alcindor in college. Much better defender, passer, and rebounder to an outlet with the fast break that UCLA perfected. Stats don’t tell the entire story. Alcindor was the better offensive weapon. BTW – I hated Walton and UCLA and rooted against them in every single game. It wasn’t until much later that I appreciated those teams, their character, and their coach.

As far as great college players go, where is Austin Carr? Of the thirteen highest individual NCAA playoff scoring performances, Austin has 6. His NCAA career playoff scoring average is 50 per/game.

Certainly a great college player but no Lew Alcindor. Blame it on injuries or whatever you want but as a pro he doesn’t belong in the HOF , let alone 50 greatest of all time. It drives me crazy when he talks about a player with heart or desire because he was sorely lacking.
How anybody can say he won an NBA title alone when Mo Lucas “Walton’s bodyguard” averaged 20.2 ppg to Walton’s 18.6 and Lionel Hollins averaged 14.7 that lone championship year that he started . He was an NBA underachiever.

@ChinaHoovers
Not so sure the injuries were solely from poor sports training/nutrition/medicine.
He had a genetic factor that contributed to bone problems.

Walton was one of my favorite players. I’ve always said that if I had to win one game — a title game of some kind — and needed a center, he’d be the guy I’d want. Tremendous defender, good shooter facing the hoop, best passing big guy ever (Tim Duncan comes close today). Great enthusiasm for the game. Played the game 94X50 — end to end.

He couldve been one of the top 3 centers of all time if he had stayed sound. He led the trailblazers to the championship in 77 without another superstar on the team, unlike Moses Malone who had Dr. J, unlike Kareem who had Magic, unlike Hakeem who had Drexler. He is the best passing center of all time too, and a great rebounder.

Yeah, there is some really dumb mistakes in the commentary. Walton wasn’t 4-4 – he wasn’t even eligible his freshman year (the UCLA freshman went undefeated and won every game by some ridiculous margin). NC state and Thompson knocked the Bruins out in the semis in 74. However, people forget that during the regular season UCLA hammered the ‘Pack. Anyway, counting high school and college, Walton played in 147 consecutive winning games. That’s pretty cool.

He was also Sixth Man of the year on the great 85 – 86 Celtics team. Injuries ruined him, but Bill was great pro.

Bill Walton was better then any Mexican. Walton could probably beat the whole Mexican team in his prime. Don’t be jealous your fat spic ass sucks at basketball like every other smelly beaner.

The commentary in this piece isn’t quite accurate. UCLA won 10 titles in 12 years, not 10 consecutive titles. Also, in the 1973 championship game vs. Memphis State, Walton was 21 for 22, not 22 for 23. But hey, close enough. Wow, what a team…

Walton took Portland in 76/77 .. that’s PORT-LAND .. from zeroes to heroes (leading the league in boards & blocks). The next year they won 50 of their 1st 60 games while he was healthy. In his career an NBA All Defensive team, 1st Team member, MVP and 6th Man winner (Celtics).
He’s an NBA great even if a short-lived one.
Poor sports training/nutrition/medicine cut his career short.

The Basketball Hall of Fame honors the best players in the sport regardless of their level of competition. It is not limited to NBA stars. There are other great college players, such as Tom Gola, who are in the Hall despite so-so careers in the NBA. Walton did win an NBA MVP award and two championship rings, but his career at UCLA was enough to earn him a spot in the Hall even if he never played in the NBA. I agree with you about the great Gus Johnson! He should be in the Hall.

This video IS Waltons career!! A great college player…..That said there is NO WAY he deserves to be in the NBA hall of fame. NO WAY, it still pisses me off that he is in and a great “breaking the mold” player like the late great Gus Johnson of the Bullets is not. It’s a crime that Stern should remedy NOW !!!
