I am trying out for my Jr. High girl’s basketball team. The tryouts are at the beginning of January and I need to prepare for it because I really want to make the team. I am pretty good player. I need like good drills to do and anything that would help me.

The most important thing is to be in good shape. Basketball requires a lot of running. Also, practice all of your skills like dribbling, shooting, passing, rebounding, defense, etc.

This is a great question. The first thing is to be confident, which it sounds like you have a good start. Also be in good basketball shape because they try to “weed out” the week players that aren’t willing to work hard in the first few days of tryouts.
To condition:
- Run as much as you can on a court, doing change of direction sprints such as suicides.
- Do defensive drills such as the figure 8. (Description available at http://www.basketball-tips-and-training.com/basketball-conditioning.html)
Also shoot and dribble around in your spare time. I’m not sure what position you’re playing. But definitely work on all aspects of your game. I don’t really have a lot of drills for you…but I do have some tips for your tryouts:
1. Play to your strengths – if you’re a great shooter, show it off.
– also play down your weaknesses; if you’re not a great shooter, for example, don’t be chucking up shots every time you get the ball, but show off your passing or dribbling skills.
2. Have confidence in everything you do during tryouts.
3. Listen to your coaches and teammates.
4. Communicate
5. Hustle on every play and also make sure to block out for rebounds – coaches love players that do and hate players that don’t
There are a few drills available at the site listed below, and a lot more detail about tryout tips. It’s just a lot of information to put in one answer.
Sorry if this is too vague, but I hope it helps. Good luck!
